How to identify your iron set
Replacing one iron starts with knowing exactly what you have. Here's where to find the model, the generation and the shaft, and what to write down before you shop. Already know the model? Jump to the iron set finder for its factory specs.
1. The model name
Look at the back of the head, in the cavity or on the badge, and along the toe. Most makers print the model there: i210, T100, Apex, P790, JPX. The club number is stamped on the sole or the toe.
2. The generation, which matters more than people expect
Many iron lines keep their name for years while the club changes underneath. TaylorMade's P790, for example, has had several generations since 2017, and Titleist's T100 has been updated roughly every two years. A 4-iron from a different generation can look, feel and fly differently, and makers sometimes change lofts between generations, which can leave an awkward distance gap in your set.
Ways to pin down the year:
- Compare the badge, cavity and finish with photos of each generation on the maker's site or in retailer listings. The designs usually change visibly.
- Check the hosel, the neck where the shaft goes in, for a serial number. The maker's customer service can often date a club from it.
- If you still have the receipt or the box, the purchase date narrows it quickly.
3. The shaft
The shaft's name and flex are printed on its label, usually just below the grip or near the head. A label like "Dynamic Gold S300" gives you the shaft model (Dynamic Gold), the flex (S for stiff) and a weight version (300). Match all three if you can: the same flex letter on a different shaft can feel quite different. See shaft flex explained for what the letters mean.
4. The fitting details
If your set was fitted, the replacement should match. Check:
- Length: standard, or longer or shorter than standard. A tape measure against the other irons tells you.
- Lie angle: how upright the club sits. Ping marks this with a colored dot or ferrule on each iron; match that color. Other makers usually bend lie on request, so it isn't always visible.
- Grip: easy to change, so it matters least, but note the model and size if you like it.
